When I started in architecture we were doing hand drafting on mylar and velum. For most architecture students today it would seem as archaic as the linen drawings I was shown at one of my first job interviews.
Luckily I rode the wave as computer-aided design and drafting came into offices and managed to learn CADD on the job, but more impressive than myself was Peter learning CADD. He always felt slow, but I often asked him how many of your contemporaries know CADD and the answer was always none.
From an employee stand point it always helps for your boss to understand the limitations of the medium. We had a few rough years when he would want something we couldn’t deliver before he learned, but I was always so impressed that he learned to love to detail in CADD.
The timing of my leaving turned out to be surprisingly good. We were submitting to the building department as I was flying off. It takes about 3 months to get through the building department in Santa Barbara. It is a time when we turn to interiors, but Randy is on top of that. Hopefully I will be back for the wedding and eventual construction.
He asked for a pool and that is some tricky negotiating that another colleague and some attorney’s are navigating simultaneously through planning and zoning.
