My client and I have been having a little give and take about views. He wants his 270 degree view from every room and at all times. In contrast I keep bringing up framed views.
My boss has told him about the monk who designed his garden in such a way that it was only when you bowed down to take a sip of water from the ladle in the basin that you could see out through a hole in the hedge to the sea and make the connection to water.
"But........., I paid soooo much" I can hear in his head. He is softening though. I believe in the end he is going to love and appreciate the contrast of the other views.
The hillside out the front door….
The green hedge at the kitchen sink…..
There is something beautiful about the hint of a pure color, texture, pattern in your line of sight as you look down an axis.
Don't get me wrong the water will be mesmerizing. It will only be enhanced by coming down the slightly oppressive canyon, catching a glimpses as you approach the house, coming through the solidness of the North wall mass to the slot canyon of the entry and finally passing through the stone anchor into the living/dining room as it opens up completely to the water. Simply intoxicating.
What luxury to bathe in the master bath tub with the fresh air coming in off the sea and
water and only water as far as you can see.
Anticipation is titillating.
I may not be able to afford this property, but I know about views. Remember those National Parks I told you about. I love them and they are free or nearly so.
I've seen and experienced views to rival anything he's got. I've used outdoor bathrooms where I've gotten to nestle in fir trees and stare across at hanging glaciers. I've dined, awash in the most spectacular alpine glow surrounded by towering peaks.
My personal New Zealand favorite is breakfast on the veranda of the Routeburn Falls Hut. Nothing better than hiking for a few hours and then coming through that constricted passage to the opening up of the endless veranda and view of the valley below - framed by the railing and posts.
Aaaaah. Now that is living.
