Now as part of her climb she ended up in fashion design school in an attempt to re-tap her creativity and boost her self-confidence. This seems to have been a good thing and has propelled her much faster than she expected into her architectural seat.
Architecture is a sport for the rich. She manages to play, but through other people, only dipping her toe into the pond occasionally with her own projects. At work she treats it like a board game on paper or video game on the computer as if the scale change were an alternative universe. One in which she doesn’t participate. It is easier that way.
After years she finally came up with a way to answer the questions clients endlessly ask her opinion about:
Is this a good idea?
Do you think that is too much to spend?
What do you think it would be like to live in that space?
In her world the answer is always:
“NO”.
“NO. YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT”.
“NO! THAT IS TOO MUCH TO SPEND”.
“NO!! IT ISN'T GOING TO HAPPEN”.
So,
“NO!!! DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO LIVE IN THAT SPACE”.
She is not much of a DREAMER.
It is OK though. She has her game she plays and you can play too. It is called.
Move the Decimal Point
If she moves the decimal point over enough she can always get to a number she can relate to.
13 Million for a house - “Are you crazy.”
1.3 Million - “No way.”
130,000 - “I could afford that.”
$800,000 for a remodel - “Oh my God!”
$80,000 - “Maybe.”
$8,000 - “Sure, Why not?”
She has played this game in fashion for years.
$1,300 for a suit or $800 for a dress – “Not happening.”
$130 or $80 for fabric – “I’m on it.”
Then along came a sport where she could combine her love or passion for design and get to “live in it”. What could be better?
At first all her barriers went up. “I can’t design clothes”. But with encouragement, “Yes you can. It is no different than architecture.”
She eventually warmed to the idea and tackled it just like a house. She took her measurements and pored over the book for weeks transferring the numbers to an “as-built” of her body.
