Chapter Seven - Enter Stage Left the Columba Moms

Updated: Nov 6, 2018

Ssshhhh! For the record this fashion design thing for me has never been about the skinny tall twenty something (or younger). Don't get me wrong I love the glamorous full page spreads as much as the next person

I just knew I would have to approach this from the average, full figured middle aged woman or it wasn't going to work.

Well of course in my head I knew I needed to approach this in the same way as I would architecture, so I needed a conceptual idea. It started as an idea of designing for a few friends and morphed into designing for my daughter's friends' moms. We were told to choose a subculture to look at and this was mine.

Columba College Moms. These women were slowly embracing the idea. Most of us met for one last tea before I left the country.

For the U.S. audience, Columba College is the all girls high-school my daughter attends. They wear school uniforms complete with blazers, ties, long woolen kilts, bobby socks and patent leather shoes. A rare thing in the States or at least for the likes of me.

It even comes with a Mistress who goes by Miss and would rival any version of your favorite childhood novel, but the girl's and parents adore her, though they all live in a little fear of her "evil eye".

Well my read on these ladies is

  1. They all have interesting life stories from all over the world that are fun to hear about.

  2. They are pleasantly surprised that someone is interested in them and it puts a bit of spring in their steps and sparkle in their eyes.

  3. It is like there is something hidden that is dying to come out.

  4. We all obviously have some part of the body that we would like to hide or downplay.

It has been fun to break bread and watch them open up. I am forever grateful that each in her own way is helping me to be able to take this trip by being there for my daughter.

Thank you!!!!!!!
