Branz has produced a great series on renovation addressing each of the main eras of New Zealand architectural design. I love these books and would say they are a must if you own a house from any of the periods covered.
They cover:
some history
basic design
construction details and methods
potential problems and remedies
compliance path (building department submittal)
Maybe it is just because I am an architect, but seeing the construction methods of the time saves so much guess work. Since I learned my trade abroad there are a lot of mysteries explained through these gorgeously drawn details.
